Rest My Head

She said "boy, don't beat yourself up so bad.
Your future is sinking, don't let it drown in the past."
But some nights I can't sleep, and I just want to dream,
Dream of leaving this city behind.
Out on the road I will find a place to rest my head and seek some grace.
Forgiveness comes easy, but I can't forget the man that I've been and the secrets I've kept.
White headlights guide me, red taillights are a warning
Not to follow me, I'll be back in the morning.
But some nights I can't sleep, so I just drive,
Finally leaving the worry behind
Out on the road I will find a place to rest my head and seek some grace.
Forgiveness comes easy, but I can't forget the man that I've been and the secrets I've kept.
I woke up that morning, pain in my chest.
I know it's a feeling I'll never forget.
Till this day it haunts me, a face in my nightmares...
The piece of my heart that I left there.

Travels

It happens every fall, the westbound highway starts to call.
I miss the escape, the guaranteed getaway.
I miss the plains' sunshine on my face.
Now it's just another season between the heatwaves and the blizzards
That always cut it short.
I try to stay ahead of all the clouds and winter weather
But I'm tired, lost and sore.
I'm chasing down a storm, I hope it leads me somewhere warm.
My bones are cold, they grow more brittle every day.
If the lightning strikes, I fear that I might break.

The Fallout

They said "Hey, stranger...you've got some boots to fill.
The last man to stand here, it took a week till he was killed.
Blood ran down the sidewalks and into our front doors,
Through all the city blocks following the war."
Righteous or rotten, neither side survives.
The fallout travels on and on and on
Till all the wrong is forgotten and everybody's gone.
The fallout travels on and on and on.
They said "Hey, stranger...only cream and bastards rise.
It's the clear and present danger we've been fighting all our lives.
Money left the sidewalks, blew out of our front doors,
Left us holding rocks...no strength to throw them anymore."
